One of the many joys of being in a coastal community is having many lighthouses to view in a day. If you enjoy touring lighthouses in Maine, the Crooked Steeple is your perfect location to stay when you are planning your next trip. Maine has over 65 historical lighthouses - 5 of which we are recommending because they are lighthouses in Maine on route 1 - which is where we are located off of. You could spend many days checking them all out - but we recommend you start here! (Descriptions from Wikipedia..)
Fort Point Lighthouse - The Fort Point Light, or Fort Point Light Station, is located in Fort Point State Park, in Stockton Springs, Maine. A lighthouse at this point has served as an active aid to navigation since 1835; the present lighthouse dates to 1857, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Bass Harbor Head Light - Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse is a lighthouse located within Acadia National Park in the southwest portion of Mount Desert Island, Maine, marking the entrance to Bass Harbor and Blue Hill Bay.
Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse - Rockland Harbor Breakwater Light is a historic lighthouse complex at the end of the Rockland Breakwater in the harbor of Rockland, Maine. Replacing a light station at Jameson Point (the northern end of the breakwater), the light was established in 1902, about two years after completion of the breakwater. Now automated, it continues to serve as an active aid to navigation. The light was added to the National Register of Historic Places as Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse on March 20, 1981.
Owls Head Light- The Owls Head Light is an active aid to navigation located at the entrance of Rockland Harbor on western Penobscot Bay in the town of Owls Head, Knox County, Maine. The lighthouse is owned by the U.S. Coast Guard and licensed to the American Lighthouse Foundation. It is the centerpiece of 13-acre (5.3 ha) Owls Head State Park and was added to the National Register of Historic Places as Owls Head Light Station in 1978.
Dice Head Lighthouse - Dice Head Light is a lighthouse in the town of Castine, Maine. First established in 1829, the light was deactivated in 1937 and replaced by a skeleton tower 475 feet (145 m) to the south. When that structure was destroyed by a storm in 2007, however, the old light was reactivated in 2008. The lighthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places

Fort Knox and Penobscot Narrows Bridge is a destination for kids and adults alike! Just a short drive from the Crooked Steeple Hall, it's a great day trip - a perfect stop on your Maine road trip, or something that your friends and family will love to check out while visiting Maine for your Destination Wedding!
According to Wikipedia, Fort Knox, now Fort Knox State Park or Fort Knox State Historic Site, is located on the western bank of the Penobscot River in the town of Prospect, Maine, about 5 miles (8.0 km) from the mouth of the river. Built between 1844 and 1869, it was the first fort in Maine built entirely of granite; most previous forts used wood, earth, and stone. It is named after Major General Henry Knox, the first U.S. Secretary of War and Commander of Artillery during the American Revolutionary War, who at the end of his life lived not far away in Thomaston. The fort was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1970, as a virtually intact example of a mid-19th century granite coastal fortification. Fort Knox also serves as the entry site for the observation tower of the Penobscot Narrows Bridge that opened to the public on 19 May 2007.
The Penobscot Narrows Bridge is a 2,120 feet (646 m) long cable-stayed bridge that carries US 1/SR 3 over the Penobscot River. It connects Verona Island to Prospect, in the U.S. state of Maine. It replaced the Waldo–Hancock Bridge, built in 1931. The Penobscot Bridge site also is home to the Penobscot Narrows Observatory, the first bridge observation tower in the United States and the tallest public bridge observatory in the world. The tower reaches 420 feet (128 m) into the air and allows visitors to view the bridge, the nearby Fort Knox State Historic Site, the Penobscot River, and Bay.

We feel very lucky to have the Winterport Winery and the Penobscot Bay Brewery as our neighbors. How many other towns with a population of around 4,000 can say they have a winery AND a brewery? We always recommend the Winterport Winery and the Penobscot Bay Brewery tasting room to our guests as an experience when staying with us. Also - you can have their wine and beers available for your guests at your event at the Crooked Steeple Hall! From the "About Us" section on their website -
The Winterport Winery, owned by Michael and Joan Anderson, opened its doors in the fall of 2001 but it really had its beginning in the Christmas gift of a home winemaking kit some 30 years earlier. What was a hobby then has now become a full time work and a family involved business - what used be stored in the family basement now occupies the 3200 sq. ft. winery and 1100 sq. ft. tasting room.
Our tasting room is a wonderful place to sample some of our wines. Come also to browse through our retail store and find that unique gift idea such as wine related items or something for that hard-to-shop for person.
Come in and meet us. You might see some of the family here or some of our friends who are all part of Winterport Winery.
Owners Joan and Mike are almost always on site when the tasting room is open and are a joy to talk with! If you're really nice, you MIGHT even get a brewery tour :)
Many of the wines are fruit based, but there are adventures for every pallate! From Sauvignon Blanc to Dessert wine, and Lagers to IPAS, there's something for everyone at the Winterport Winery and Penobscot Bay Brewery. Just one more reason to add Winterport, Maine to your list of destinations to stay and play!

I stayed at Katrina’s place with some friends. We met her upon arrival and she was extremely nice and welcoming to her home. She also gave a helpful tour of the house and told my friend and me about her bakery that she runs in the house, which was really cool to see. She was even nice enough to leave some baked treats for us. The house is comfortable as it feels lived in like a childhood home. There is a large amount of space and plenty to do, would definitely stay again!

Katrina's place is easy to find and handy to town but not in a crowded area. A really thoughtful touch on a cold winter night was providing snack and coffee/hot drink supplies in the room- as well as Maine maple syrup! The in-house bakery serves great local coffee and their own pastries which tasted great. It was a comfortable stay on a frigid night and we recommend Katrina's place.

One of the joys of living in Maine, is we have beautiful white Christmases - with a LOT OF SNOW! When you live in Maine, you embrace all of the seasons - but winter is one of our favorites! Cozying up with a loved one in the guest house at the Crooked Steeple Hall is a great way to relax and unwind. On a sunny day, snowshoeing in Maine is one of our favorite activities, and we are lucky to have quite a few places for a beautiful snowshoe adventure not far from our front doors! Enjoy breakfast and coffee at one of our local eateries, then bundle up for a nice snowshoe in a place that resembles Narnia! The State of Maine offers many trails to experience, however these are some of our favorites that are local that we hope our guests will enjoy!
1)Dorthea Dix Park in Hampden, Maine
This gem has walking trails throughout the park and provides a great workout in a short period of time!
You can read more about this trail and see photos here
2) Trails at the Leroy H. Smith School in Winterport
A short trail system begins at the rear of the parking lot at the Leroy H. Smith School
3) Trails at the Reeds Brook School in Hampden
Located in the heart of Hampden, Maine, this is a collaborative effort between community volunteers, members of the Penobscot Valley Ski Club, Troop 41 Boy Scouts, and RSU22. We welcome all non-motorized activity including skiing, running, biking, walking, and snowshoeing. Motorized vehicles of any kind are prohibited on the trails.
Rolland F. Perry City Forest encompasses more than 680 acres of wildlife habitat and working forest in Bangor, Maine, and features more than 4 miles of access roads and more than 9 miles of trails for running, hiking, biking, snowshoeing, and cross country skiing. It is owned by the city of Bangor and open throughout the year.
5) Advanced: Mount Waldo
Mount Waldo is on privately owned land and it is a great hike for all seasons. We only recommend this hike if you're experienced on snowshoes and in hiking. The trails are marked by brightly colored ties on trees. The view is worth it, if you're feeling up to it!
Otherwise, you can snowshoe up to the Quarry - it's a nice viewpoint as well.
Don't have snowshoes? It's OK! You can rent them in Bangor at Ski Rack Sports!
Questions about local area activities? Message me! I'd love to help.
