No Social Media?

At the risk of being pedantic, I thought I’d write a post about why our small company doesn’t have social media. Back in the day, way, way, way, back in the day, I started a blog. This was back before Facebook existed. I had a MySpace. I had a Blogger blog. I actually made money (albeit, a dinner out was about what it covered).

Then came social media, fast and furious. I was training on HubSpot. Every time I blinked, it seemed like I had a new business social media page or account. I had 10 google accounts. I ran multiple Facebook business pages, twitter accounts, instagrams, and who knows what other social media time forget (like Gather.com). I was good. Oh so good. I was really good at content, and particularly at tagging other people and businesses that I knew would push the organic reach. It was easy to build followers, get interaction, and talk to real people about fun things I was part of creating. Pants on Fire 5k, I’m looking at you!

Somewhere along the way, monetization won in a big way. And the bots came. And social media, by and large, has become a toxic echo chamber where people feed their fear and anger, as they continue to splinter into smaller groups of people who only agree with each other.

Gone is the community, the sense of connection, and the joy. Gone is the illusion that the creators and owners of social media want anything but billions more to pile onto their already eye-popping piles of wealth. Long gone are any guardrails around reading factual information vetted by journalist (paid or citizen volunteers) who simply want to get the truth out.

What’s a small-town business owner to do? While I certainly don’t want to bring politics to the front and center, I cannot participate in an economic force that gives so much wealth and power to so few, while turning people against each other, and ignoring the real-world societal and mental-health impacts.

All of the above is why our small business does not have social media. We have our website, email, and phone. Reach out to us anytime. We are a small team, in a small town, committed to connection, in-person.

Tipping Your Venue?

Tipping is part of any event. Some vendors will automatically add gratuity, and others will make it optional. If you aren’t sure, check your contract or reach out to your vendor. At Crooked Steeple Hall and the 1812 Pierce House, we won’t expect or add gratuity. However, if you enjoyed the services provided by our staff, we recommend you tip equal 1-2% of the total amount paid for the venue with staff, and then multiply it by the number of staff members that day.

Venue Staff Tipping Examples:

  • If the venue price for your wedding is $5000 with 4-5 staff, we suggest a tip of between $50-$100 per staff member.

  • Or a bridal shower that cost $1000, we suggest a tip of $10-$20 per staff member.

Ultimately it is your choice!

Guide to Planning an Awesome Bridal Shower (Part 2)

So you took our advice and planned an epic bridal shower for your bff. Food, music, venue and decor are covered. Invitations have been sent. It’s time to figure out the event flow. Don’t worry, we’ve got you with this sample agenda.

1. Host(s) arrives at the bridal shower venue and sets up.

On the day of the shower, you want to arrive early to ensure everything is in place… food, decor and music should be ready before guests begin to arrive.

Remember to set up a gift table. Towards the end of most bridal showers is the gift opening, where the bride-to-be opens all her shower gifts. To make this process seamless, set up a table for gifts so that when guests arrive, they can drop their presents on the table. Then when it’s time to open them, all the gifts are in one area.

2. The bride-to-be and guests arrive at the party and mingling, begins. Make sure you have a welcome beverage and/or some finger foods on hand (30 minutes).

3. Serve hors’ d’oeuvres and cocktails OR sit down to main meal (45 minutes).

4. Play your planned bridal shower games or other activities (45 minutes).

.5. Time for the bride to open her presents (45 minutes).

Pro tip: Take note of the gift and the giver when the bride-to-be opens the present so she can remember whom to thank afterwards.

Pro tip: Some people find this part of the shower tedious so they opt to omit it altogether. An alternative is to ask guests to leave their presents unwrapped so that guests can still see the items that were gifted (approx. 2 hours).

6. Host makes a toast to the bride-to-be (5 minutes).

As you play hostess, remember that near the end of the shower, you’ll also have to make a toast. Take some time before the event to jot down some speaking points. This does not have to be a formal speech. Introduce yourself, thank the guests for coming and offer well wishes to the bride.

7. Event ends and clean up begins.

Remember, if you’re looking for an awesome space to host a bridal shower near Winterport, Maine, check out 1812 Pierce House, our beautiful rental that’s actually listed on the National Register of Historical Places. Contact us to learn more or to book your dates.

Guide to Planning An Awesome Bridal Shower

So your bff is getting married and it’s your responsibility to host her bridal shower. But perhaps hosting events is not in your wheelhouse so you’re feeling overwhelmed. Is that you? Don’t worry… in this blog we’ll talk about some of the things you need to do to plan a successful, fun, memorable bridal shower.

A traditional bridal shower typically includes an all-female guest list, comprising the brides friends and close relatives on both the bride and groom’s sides of the family. It includes a mix of eating, playing games, socialising and of course… opening prezzies. These days however, bridal showers can be co-ed.

Let’s take a walk through the major steps in planning the bridal shower.

Budget

Usually, it’s the bridal party, led by the maid of honor that hosts the bridal shower. Agree with the other bridesmaids on a reasonable budget before beginning to plan.

Set the Date

Bridal showers typically take place one or two months before the wedding. Due close out-of-town family members coming in for the wedding, sometimes the bridal shower is held a week or so before the wedding. You’ll also need to consult with the bride before finalising the date to ensure she’s available for her own shower.

Create a guest list

A traditional bridal shower includes an all-female guest list, comprising the bride's friends and close relatives on both the bride and groom’s sides. Over the past few years however, co-ed showers have risen in popularity.

Tip: Bridal shower guests should also be wedding guests so it’s a good idea to run your guest list by the bride first.

Choose your venue

It’s traditional for the bridal shower to be held at the host’s home. But you can also consider a banquet hall, restaurant, spa or other venue. Make sure you consider things like parking, and ease of access for the guests.

If you’re near Winterport, Maine then 1812 Pierce House  is an ideal venue for hosting your bridal shower. On the National Register of Historic Places, this home is a blend of modern convenience and historical charm and accommodates up to 20 people.

1812 Pierce House offers a large fully equipped kitchen w/ big center island, 3 ovens. 5 sleeping rooms, TV room, formal living room with original fireplace, formal dining room. One full bath & two half baths as well as a large yard with firepit.

Choose a theme

Choosing a theme isn’t essential but it can be helpful when choosing the menu and decor. If you’re the maid of honor, chances are you know the bride better than most. Use this insider knowledge to set a theme you know she’ll love. Themes could be tropical, Bridgerton, tea party, rustic, brunch, sip n’ paint etc.

Send invitations

Remember to send invitations early! Evites are appropriate and convenient. We recommend sending the invitations 6-8 weeks before the event. This gives guests enough time to pencil in the date, confirm their availability and gift shop. Remember to include a dress code.

Menu

The yummiest part of planning. The key things to remember about menu planning are:

  • It should be food the bride enjoys

  • It should be easy to serve and eat

  • It shouldn’t break your budget

Having a theme may be helpful in deciding on a menu. For example, if you decide to have a Bridgerton-esque tea party, then you’ll be having tea cakes, cucumber sandwiches, scones, etc.

You can choose to cater, potluck or even take on the meal prep yourself with help from your fellow bridesmaids.

Decor

Make sure your bridal shower space is warm and inviting. If you choose a theme, your decor should reflect it. Need inspiration? Head to Pinterest and search for bridal shower decor ideas.

Games

Games help to break the ice when all the guests may not know each other. They’re also lots of fun. All you need to do is do a Google search for bridal shower games and pick a few that you find interesting and for which the materials are easy to find. You should also consider the personalities of your guests when choosing your games. You only need about three or four games.

Playlist

Background music contributes to the ambiance of the event. Head to your favorite streaming service or YouTube, and create a playlist of music you know the bride would enjoy.

In our next blog, we’ll walk you through the bridal shower itself.

4 Favorite Waterfront Paths in Maine

When some people talk about their love for the outdoors, they’re referring to their enjoyment of hikes that test the limits of their bodies and make their mamas clutch their pearls with anxiety. Others find bliss in simple pleasures… like walking along gentle trails or sitting in the park.

Maine caters to both ends of the spectrum and everything in between but in this blog we’ll focus on some of our favorite waterfront paths, ideal for those on the less extreme end of the spectrum.

Bangor Waterfront Path

Located along the Penobscot River, this 1-mile pathway runs through Bangor’s vibrant, scenic Waterfront Park. It features a paved walking trail, lovely sculptures, a public small craft dock, benches, picnic areas and a space for concerts and festivals in the summer.

Brewer Waterfront Path

The Brewer Waterfront Path is also located along the Penobscot River but in the city of Brewer. It features an easy, paved path with lots of grassy spots for picnics, a children’s garden, a granite kayak launch, granite chess/checker stations and a space for performances. You can bring your pup along but it must be leashed. It’s also a great location for bird lovers to catch sight of many species of bird.

Belfast Harborwalk and Footbridge

Belfast Harborwalk and Footbridge offers a great opportunity to see the harbor in downtown Belfast. Bird lovers will also have plenty of opportunity to spot birds as they stroll, bike, jog or just sit on one of the benches along the harbor shore.

One neat thing about the harborwalk is its active boatyard. Depending on the time of day, you’ll see the boatyard buzzing with activity… you may even see the workers placing a boat back into the water.

I love how much the locals love the harborwalk. There’s always a mix of tourists and locals taking a stroll.

Right off the harborwalk you can grab a brew or a bite at a local pub or cafe. The seafood is always fresh and delicious. Leashed dogs are welcome on this path.

Bucksport Waterfront Path

The Bucksport Waterfront Path, located in downtown Bucksport, is just as lovely as the other waterfront paths on this list. It features lots of plants and flowers, gazebos and water fountains along the brick-paved path. A perfect evening might look like dinner at a downtown restaurant followed by a romantic stroll through the park.

If you’re visiting Maine soon, be sure to make time for a stroll through any one of our beautiful waterfront paths. Looking for a place to stay on your Maine vacation? Check out our accommodations at Crooked Steeple Hall and 1812 Pierce House in the lovely town of Winterport, Maine. We’d be happy to host you.

Maine Maple Sunday - The Sweetest Sunday in March

You know spring is (almost) in the air when Maine Maple Sunday rolls around. Maple season is the time when maple producers tap maple trees to collect their sap, which is then evaporated to create everyone’s favorite pancake syrup. The season coincides with that transition period between winter and spring - usually in March but what’s really special about maple season in Maine is Maine Maple Sunday.

When you stay with us at Crooked Steeple Hall and 1812 Pierce House, Maine Maple Sunday is one of our favorite family-friendly activities you can go to this month!

At this annual event on the fourth Sunday in March, maple farmers from all around the state open their sugar houses (where maple syrup is made) to the public for a celebration of all things maple. Yum!

This year, approximately 100 sugar houses will participate in the event on March 27th so wherever you are in Maine, you’re bound to find a participating sugar house nearby. At Crooked Steeple Hall, one of our favorite sugar houses is at Nutkin Knoll Farm in Newburgh.

Nutkin is a traditional, family-owned farm that produces fruits, vegetables, maple, and even Christmas trees and balsam wreaths. The scenic farm also has an antique barn, wood-fired sap evaporators and farm animals aplenty.

This year, Nutkin Knoll Farm will celebrate Maine Maple Sunday on both Saturday March 26th and Sunday March 27th. You’ll be able to explore the farm via groomed trails, tour the woods to view the 2000 pipeline tap system and visit the sugar house to learn the process of how maple is made.

There’ll also be tree tapping demos so you can try it at home. Kids will be enthralled by the barnyard animals and the super cute spring lambs.

And after all that excitement, you’ll get to sample some fresh, sweet maple atop ice-cream and yummy maple milk. Other goodies like maple cotton candy, maple candy, maple kettle corn and more will be sale too.

Be sure to dress for the outdoors - it may be a little muddy so we recommend boots. And if you have a leashed, well-mannered furry friend, you can bring them along too. Maine Maple Sunday at Nutkin Knoll really is fun for the whole family.

Hopefully we’ll see you there, and don’t forget to book your stay with us below!

7 Cool Things to Do Near Bangor, Maine

Planning a trip to Bangor soon? Here are a few fun suggestions for your itinerary.

Penobscot River Walkway

One of the coolest things about the city of Bangor is the Penabscot River that meanders through the city.

The city has capitalised on the allure of the river by creating a paved pathway for walking - or jogging or skating or riding.. Or if you’d prefer, you could claim one of the benches that dot the pathway and just enjoy the scenery, do some people watching or munch on some of the fare offered by the food trucks around the area.

Visit Stephen King’s Home

Did you know? The famed author of horrors, Stephen King has a home in Bangor, Maine. King’s fans would get a kick out of visiting his neighbourhood. Although it’s a private residence, you can stop by to take pics of the home with its unique wrought iron fence and cool wood carving on the lawn.

Some fans have even been lucky enough to have a chat with King by the gate on occasion.

Cole Land Transportation Museum

A visit to the Cole Land Transportation Museum will transport you back in time to Maine’s early land transportation equipment. The exhibits feature farm equipment, fire engines, motorcycles and bicycles, snowplows and rails, as well as military vehicles from World War 2.

But the coolest thing about this museum is the fun scavenger hunt. When you enter, you receive a card with a list of things to find as you explore - it’s fun for the entire family.

Penobscot Theater Company

What’s more classic than dinner and an evening at the theater? The Penobscot Theater Company is a non-profit that produces excellent quality plays and musicals throughout the year.

You’ll be completely drawn in by the realistic sets and awesome performances of the actors.

Mount Hope Garden Cemetery

Okay… what kind of person would even want to visit a cemetery in the first place?

Trust us on this. It’s one of the oldest garden cemeteries in the country and it’s beautiful. Guided tours are available but you are free to walk around and explore the scenery for yourself.

Maine Discovery Museum

If you’re bringing the kids on your trip, you must stop at Maine Discovery Museum. This children’s museum is highly interactive with lots of exhibits designed for kids to learn while having fun. Youngsters would love the multi-story tree fort that they can climb… be prepared to be asked to visit again and again.

Maine Discovery Museum closed temporarily due to COVID-19 but is scheduled to reopen in February 2022.

Paul Bunyan Statue

In case you’re unfamiliar, Paul Bunyan is something of a national folk hero. Featured in many folklore stories, according to the lore, Bunyan was a lumberjack with superhuman powers.

At 31 feet high, Bangor boasts the largest statue of Bunyan in the US… and some would say it’s the best rendering too. We say it’s worth a quick drive by and photo op on your trip to Bangor.

Looking for somewhere to stay while visiting Bangor? Check us out at 1812 Pierce House over at Winterport, Maine. Amazingly comfortable accommodations near these attractions in Bangor.

Things to Do in Abbott Park, Winterport

I love spending time in nature, either by myself or with my favorite people.. From the fresh flowers of spring to the range of hues in fall, each season has its own unique kind of natural beauty and I can’t get enough. I might be a little biased but I think you’ll agree... Winterport doesn’t disappoint when it comes to nature. There’s natural beauty all around.

One of my favorite nature parks is Abbott Park, located just across the street from our 1812 Pierce House holiday rental property and a short walk from Crooked Steeple Hall. Abbott Park is a natural local gem, and we are so fortunate to have it located a stone’s throw away from us.

If walking is your thing, Abbott Park has a few trails for you to enjoy. If you’d rather explore or forage through the woods, Abbott Park will not disappoint. History buffs will also enjoy scoping out the Park’s old stone walls and other features.

If you’re visiting Winterport, Maine and you’re staying with us at Pierce House, or anywhere else for that matter, Abbott Park should definitely be on your itinerary. Here are a few suggestions for how you can spend your time at Abbott Park:

  • Early morning walk

After a cosy night at Pierce House, throw on your workout clothes, grab your headphones, select your favorite Spotify playlist and hit up one of the trails at Abbott Park. You’ll enjoy the early morning vitamin D and the sounds and sights of nature in complete tranquility. Pure bliss.

  • Scavenger Hunt

On vacation with the family? Plan a scavenger hunt for the kids or kids-at-heart. They’ll have fun learning, exploring and competing to win. All you need is a list of items for the kiddos to collect as you walk through the park and bags for storing the treasures.. Examples of items to collect are pine cones, stones, leaves, twigs, feathers and acorns.

After you’ve worked up an appetite from all that scavenging, you’ll be ready for a picnic.

  • Picnic

We have a fully-outfitted kitchen over at Pierce House but we know that doesn’t mean you want to cook on your vacation, right? No worries. Winterport has lots of delicious local food options to ensure you put together a picnic to remember. Check out some of our favorite foodie spots here and here.

  • Photography

Four Farms to Visit Near Winterport

After nearly two years of pandemonium caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, we have so much for which to be grateful. I’m thankful for life, health, family and of course, Crooked Steeple Hall and all our wonderful guests.

I’m also thankful for how blessed we are at Crooked Steeple to live close to farmers who produce quality food for us to nourish our bodies on Thanksgiving and every other day of the year. These farms employ ethical practices, are members of our community and they make a delicious addition to your itinerary on your visit to Winterport, Maine.

Good Food Farm

Good Food Farm is located on Mount Waldo Road in Frankfort, Maine. Go for the organic-fed, pastured chicken, turkey and lamb, and free-range eggs they have for sale but stay for the spectacular views.

The trailhead to Mt Waldo is located near Good Food Farm so you can plan for the moderate hike up Mt Waldo and then purchase your items from Good Food Farm after you’ve had your fill of the awesome views.

Calkins Farm

Calkins Farm, located in Hampden, Maine, has been a staple in the community since 1924 and is run by fourth-generation Calkins family members today.

They grow a variety of organic seasonal fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers on a 30-acre farm just behind their farm stand.

Calkins also retails fresh eggs and local products like maple syrup, honey and homemade jam and is the best place to pick up your pumpkins for fall.

Fisher Farm

Fisher Farm is located just up the road from Crooked Steeple. We often recommend them to brides wanting to create their own bouquets and flower decor.

But besides flowers, Fisher Farm also grows and sells organic fruits and vegetables. You can make an afternoon out of walking the farm and seeing how an organic farm operates.

If you live nearby, you can join the community-supported agriculture (CSA) program. When you join the Fisher Farm CSA, you receive a share of the weekly harvest throughout the season in exchange for your financial support.

If you don’t live in Winterport, you can always look for a CSA in your city.  It’s an excellent incentive for including more fresh fruit and veggies in your diet.

Souder Station Farm

We love Souder Station Farm because of its commitment to raising happy, healthy, pastured animals and because they’re located right here in Winterport.

Try their pork sampler box. It’s loaded with all kinds of yummy sausages, nitrate-free bacon, ribs, pork chops, ham and a roast.

We love sharing all the things we love about Maine and especially our town of Winterport with you. Subscribe to our newsletter to stay updated on our newest posts and latest offers at Crooked Steeple Hall.

5 Best Museums to Visit in Maine

As a child, I thought museums were for boring old people. I guess I’m boring old people now because these days I get excited about a day at the museum. It’s fascinating to dive into history and explore the past through artefacts and exhibits.

There are plenty of museums that highlight Maine’s rich and diverse history and I highly recommend a visit to at least one on your next visit to Maine. Here are a few to get you started.

Norlands Living History Museum, Farm and Archive

290 Norlands Road, Livermore, Maine 04253

Transport yourself back to farm life in the 1800s when you visit Norlands Living History Museum. You’ll learn all about the past by experiencing it in the present as you participate in the everyday farm activities of the 1870s like cooking, feeding farm animals, and going to school in a one-room schoolhouse. It’s an epic experience.

Maine Historical Society

489 Congress Street, Portland, ME 04101

The exhibitions at the Maine Historical Society feature more than twelve centuries of Maine history. Current exhibitions include:

  • Begin Again: Reckoning with Intolerance in Maine. This exhibit take a hard look at the state’s role social injustice. It invites viewers to evaluate the role policies and the entrenched system over the last 5 centuries have led to social injustice and civil, economic and environrmental unrest. The goal of the exhibit is to help viewers envision a more inclusive, equitable future for all.

  • Passing the Time: Artwork by World War II German Prisoners There were a number of artists among the German prisoners of war who were remanded to Camp Houlton, an internment camp that the U.S. government established in 1944. This exhibition features their artwork during this tumultuous time in their lives. This exhibit can also be viewed online here

Abbe Museum

26 Mt Desert Street / PO Box 286 / Bar Harbor, ME 04609

The Abbe Museum is the only Smithsonian-affiliated museum in Maine and is located in downtown Bar Harbor. Its exhibits focus on the way of life of Maine natives - the Wabanak peoplei.

The Wabanaki or people of the dawn, lived in Maine for thousands of years prior to European colonisation. The Abbe immerses people into the culture of the Wabanaki and corrects the harmful representations of this indigenous group.

Maine State Museum

The Maine State Museum is currently undergoing major renovations until 2023 but is still worth a mention.

The museum is currently running several online exhibits do have online exhibits running in the meantime. Here are a couple of interesting ones:

  • Flight to Extinction: This exhibit focuses on telling the story of the now-extinct passenger pigeon.

  • Women’s Long Road - 100 Years to Vote: This exhibit tells the story of women’s suffrage/right to vote in Maine.

Crooked Steeple Hall

How could I leave this one out? It’s not a museum but it is listed on the National Registry of Historical Places. Crooked Steeple Hall in Winterport, Maine was originally built as a quaint local church complete with a crooked steeple way back in 1850.

Today, the structure still boasts its original woodwork and tin walls but it has been renovated  to include modern amenities.

Come visit us. With our open, flexible floor plan, onsite bridal suite, kitchen facilities and afterparty spaces, you can create your wedding or event vision for up to 200 guests.

5 Fantastic Reasons for a Fall Wedding in Maine

Still thinking about a date for your wedding? Spring and Summer weddings have been popular for decades but today on the blog we’re making a plug for a cosy fall wedding.

Beautiful Foliage

Autumn in Maine is a beautiful blend of hues of gold, red, orange, yellow and brown foliage. It’s breathtaking and the perfect backdrop for your wedding photos. Awesome photo-ops exist virtually everywhere. Oh, the photos you’ll take. Close your eyes and let your imagination run wild.

The lawn of the Union Meeting House, located just across the street from Crooked Steeple, with its beautiful trees looks amazing this time of year. Other great photoshoot options include Blueberry Hill, Mount Waldo and Treat Point in Frankfort.

Great weather

By September, the heat and humidity of summer are gone but the weather is still lovely and you don’t have to deal with the mosquitoes. Sounds pretty ideal to me.

Plus fall also tends to be less rainy than spring or summer so you have one less contingency about which to worry.

One caveat. Although the days are warm, the evenings can get quite chilly so you’d want to consider that in case you’re planning an outdoor wedding.

Have Fun with Fall Foods

The foods of fall are so warm and comforting and delicious. Some fun ideas are a harvest-themed meal, an apple cider donut wall or a flavours-of-fall pie bar. You can also swap champagne and opt to toast with hot cider or mulled wine.

No competition

You won’t be competing with your guests’ summer, Christmas or even Thanksgiving plans if you plan your wedding earlier in the season.

Easier on your budget (Maybe*)

Because peak wedding season falls in Spring and Summer, you’re more likely to score a deal from vendors during the fall off-season or shoulder season. That’s money you can put towards your honeymoon or home decor or even a downpayment for a new home.

We must admit that these savings may not be as great, as fall weddings have been increasing in popularity in recent years. Some even say Fall is the new Spring/Summer for weddings, especially in Maine. This means that you should still make your bookings early to ensure you get exactly what you want.

P.S. Crooked Steeple Hall still has dates open for weddings in Fall 2022. Let’s chat. We’d love to help you bring your wedding vision to life at our beautiful venue.
