Maine Maple Sunday - The Sweetest Sunday in March

You know spring is (almost) in the air when Maine Maple Sunday rolls around. Maple season is the time when maple producers tap maple trees to collect their sap, which is then evaporated to create everyone’s favorite pancake syrup. The season coincides with that transition period between winter and spring - usually in March but what’s really special about maple season in Maine is Maine Maple Sunday.

When you stay with us at Crooked Steeple Hall and 1812 Pierce House, Maine Maple Sunday is one of our favorite family-friendly activities you can go to this month!

At this annual event on the fourth Sunday in March, maple farmers from all around the state open their sugar houses (where maple syrup is made) to the public for a celebration of all things maple. Yum!

This year, approximately 100 sugar houses will participate in the event on March 27th so wherever you are in Maine, you’re bound to find a participating sugar house nearby. At Crooked Steeple Hall, one of our favorite sugar houses is at Nutkin Knoll Farm in Newburgh.

Nutkin is a traditional, family-owned farm that produces fruits, vegetables, maple, and even Christmas trees and balsam wreaths. The scenic farm also has an antique barn, wood-fired sap evaporators and farm animals aplenty.

This year, Nutkin Knoll Farm will celebrate Maine Maple Sunday on both Saturday March 26th and Sunday March 27th. You’ll be able to explore the farm via groomed trails, tour the woods to view the 2000 pipeline tap system and visit the sugar house to learn the process of how maple is made.

There’ll also be tree tapping demos so you can try it at home. Kids will be enthralled by the barnyard animals and the super cute spring lambs.

And after all that excitement, you’ll get to sample some fresh, sweet maple atop ice-cream and yummy maple milk. Other goodies like maple cotton candy, maple candy, maple kettle corn and more will be sale too.

Be sure to dress for the outdoors - it may be a little muddy so we recommend boots. And if you have a leashed, well-mannered furry friend, you can bring them along too. Maine Maple Sunday at Nutkin Knoll really is fun for the whole family.

Hopefully we’ll see you there, and don’t forget to book your stay with us below!
